Menstrual Cycle

A reproductive cycle which is seen in female primates which include apes, monkeys, and humans. it begins in the puberty and the first menstrual cycle is called menarche which ceases around 50 years and termed as menopause.it is a periodic cycle of 28/29 days on an average. It has 4 stages. 1) Menstrual phase : It lasts for 3-5days. Degeneration of corpus luteum takes place. Levels of progesterone and oestrogen decreases, which leads to the breakdown of endometrium. 2) Follicular phase : it is also known as proliferative phase. Development of follicles occur. Level of hormones and formation of endometrium increases gradually . 3) Ovulation phase :  it happens on the 14th day. Size of the follicle increases which leads to the drastic increase in LH (LH surge) and FSH levels.
